Hiring travel insurance to Europe or Schengen insurance is one of the first things that should be done when organizing a trip to this continent.
Although having travel insurance in Europe raises many questions, especially among travelers who have the European Health Card, in this article you will discover when it is mandatory to have travel insurance for Europe.
First of all, I want to tell you that in our comparison of the best travel insurance for 2022, Mondo turned out to be the best option thanks to its high coverage and affordable prices. We are the one that we have contracted at the moment, but we have also used other insurances such as Mapfre and IATI, which, depending on the case, may present other advantages.

IS IT MANDATORY TO TAKE OUT TRAVEL INSURANCE TO EUROPE?
Not all travelers are required to have travel insurance in Europe, only those who need to apply for a Schengen visa will need to have one. It will also be mandatory to travel to those countries open to tourism that require it as an entry requirement due to COVID-19.
If you are from Spain and you are going to travel through Europe, it is not strictly mandatory to have travel insurance, since you can use the European Health Card (TSE).
However, travel insurance should not be purchased only when it is a requirement to enter the country, since any unforeseen event may arise, such as loss or damage to luggage or cancellation of the trip, among other things not covered by the TSE.
For more information, select if you are a Spanish traveler or if you are traveling from outside Europe.
DO I NEED INSURANCE FOR EUROPE TO TRAVEL FROM ABROAD?
Travelers who need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Europe must have Europe travel insurance.
These types of travelers, regardless of whether they are traveling for business, tourism, studies, or any other reason, are required to have Schengen travel insurance that covers their entire stay in Europe.
SCHENGEN TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
In order to obtain the visa, the insurance for travel to Europe must have a minimum coverage of €30,000 and must cover any of the states that are part of the Schengen area.
Medical assistance is not cheap, since an emergency operation can cost up to €50,000 in some European countries, which would imply that the traveler would be responsible for the remaining €20,000. This means that the minimum coverage required by Schengen travel insurance may be insufficient in some cases, so I recommend hiring one with greater coverage.
Another of the requirements in order to obtain a visa is that it is not a simple travel medical insurance to Europe and that it has coverage against other unforeseen events that may arise, such as repatriation or early return for medical reasons or death.
It is also required that the insurance be valid for the entire time that you are traveling.
